Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal data GoDeutsch ("we", "us") collects when you use the GoDeutsch mobile app and this website, why we collect it, and what rights you have. We keep data collection to what the service actually needs.
1. Who is responsible
GoDeutsch is the controller for the processing described here. You can reach us at hello@godeutsch.com.
2. Data we collect
- Account data — your email address, sign-in provider (e.g. Google or Apple), display name and a verification status. Accounts created with an email address must be verified through a sign-in link before they can be used.
- Study data — your chosen exam board and CEFR level, placement-test results, answers, scores, streaks, vocabulary progress and study settings. This is what lets the app show your progress across devices.
- Speech data — when you use realtime speech practice, your microphone audio is streamed to our speech provider for the duration of the session so it can reply to you. The audio is not recorded or stored: what we keep is the transcript of the session, together with the feedback and grade generated from it.
- Written submissions — texts you submit for writing feedback, and the feedback generated for them.
- Purchase data — subscription status and receipts from the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never receive your card details; payment is handled entirely by the store.
- Device and diagnostic data — device model, operating system version, app version, language, coarse region, crash reports and anonymous usage events, used to fix bugs and understand which features are used.
3. Why we use it
- To provide the service: run exams, score answers, generate speech and writing feedback, and sync progress.
- To keep your account secure and prevent abuse of paid or rate-limited features.
- To fix crashes and improve exam content and difficulty calibration.
- To handle support requests you send us.
- To meet legal, tax and accounting obligations.
4. Legal bases (GDPR)
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (providing the app you signed up for), our legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, product improvement), your consent (microphone access, optional analytics where required), and legal obligation (record keeping).
5. Realtime speech and AI processing
Realtime speech practice and writing feedback are produced with the help of third-party AI providers. Your audio or text is transmitted to those providers solely to generate the response and feedback you asked for. We instruct our providers not to use your content to train their models. Speaking sessions are graded from the transcript alone — the audio itself is never sent to a grading model and never stored. Realtime speech is metered and subject to the usage limits described in our Terms of Service.
The microphone is only active while a speech session is running. You can revoke microphone access at any time in your device settings; the rest of the app continues to work.
6. Who we share data with
- Cloud and authentication infrastructure (including Google Firebase) for accounts, database storage and crash reporting.
- AI and speech providers, for the realtime speech and writing-feedback features described above.
- Apple and Google, as the payment processors and distributors of the app.
- Authorities, where we are legally required to disclose information.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertising networks.
7. International transfers
Some of our processors operate outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, transfers are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.
8. Retention
- Account and study data: kept while your account exists, then deleted (or anonymised for statistics) within 90 days of deletion.
- Speech audio: never written to storage — it exists only for the length of the live session. Transcripts and feedback are kept with your study data so you can review them, and you can delete them in the app.
- Crash and diagnostic data: typically retained up to 12 months.
- Purchase records: kept as long as tax and accounting law requires.
9. Your rights
You can request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing. You can delete your account directly in the app, or write to hello@godeutsch.com. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
10. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will remove it.
11. Security
Data is encrypted in transit, access to production systems is restricted, and authentication is handled by established providers. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data.
12. This website
This website stores your theme and language preference in your browser's local storage. It sets no advertising cookies and embeds no third-party trackers. The contact form does not send anything to us on its own — it opens your own email app with the message pre-filled.
13. Changes
We will update this page when the service changes, and we will note the date at the top. Significant changes are also announced in the app.
